With the ringing of the first bell on August 12 changes are happening at Jefferson ISD that affects how students arrive and depart campus as well as new bag requirements at extra-curricular activities.
Traffic patterns to pickup and drop off students will be changing around the elementary and middle and junior high campuses. The consolidation and reorganization of grades created the need to redo traffic patterns.
Elementary Campus
The parent pick-up lane on the east side of campus, off Tuttle Street, will continue to be used for parent drop off and pick up for students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades.
The loop on Martin Luther King Drive, the old bus lane, on the west side of campus will now be used for parent drop off and pick up for students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Head Start.
School buses will now load and unload at the main entrance to the school on Harrison Street on the south side of campus. The main entrance will be closed to car traffic until 7:50a each morning and closed again to car traffic each evening starting at 3p.
Middle & Junior High Campuses
Parent drop off and pick up for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade will be on Harrison Street on the south side of campus, just as 5th and 6th grade have been previously.
Parent pick up and drop off for 7th and 8th grade will remain in the circle drive off Whelan Street on the north side of campus.
The bus lane remains the same and is closed to outside traffic prior to 7:55a and after 3p.
During the school day, the main entrance on Alley Street will remain the only entrance for parents and public for all grade levels on this complex.
Entry time each morning for all campuses is 7:20a with classes starting at 7:45a. Dismissal time for all campuses is 3:30p.
Personal Communication Devices
The 2025 state legislative session introduced HB1481 which requires districts to have a policy prohibiting the use of personal communication devices by students during the school day. It also requires a clear punishment for violating the policy.
The law defines ‘personal communication device’ as a telephone, cell phone such as a smart phone or flip phone, tablet, smartwatch, radio device, paging device, headphones, earbuds, or any other electronic device capable of telecommunication or digital communication. School issued devices, and a few other individual education plans are exempt.
The policy allows for usage before the first bell and after school, but during lunch and between classes usage is prohibited. Devices must be left in lockers or backpacks and cannot be in pockets or in hands. If devices are found on the student, then it is an offense.
Punishment for the first offense requires the student to pickup the device and the parent notified. Second and third offenses require a parentto pickup the device. Fourth is one day in detention. Fifth is three days detention, and six or more offenses incur one day in ISS per time. Refusal to turn over a device may incur additional punishment action.
Extra-Curricular Events
An Open Gate Weapons Detection System will be in place at all extra-curricular events this year.
A “Clear Bag” policy will also go into effect. Student carried backpacks are exempt. The maximum size allowed will be 12”x12”x6” or small clutch (5”x7”). Diaper bags will be allowed, but coolers, camera bags, umbrellas, large signs, fat heads, balloons, etc., are not.
Only properly licensed and tagged service animals will be allowed at events.
No outside food or drink will be allowed.
State law and school policy will control alcoholic beverages, controlled substances, tobacco products and vaping devices
