Jefferson City Council approved spending $41,100 on new chain link fencing at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery during Tuesday’s meeting.

Leon Hill Fence in Marshall provided the low bid to replace the 6-foot fencing. Cost includes removal and re installation, without the barbed wire top.

An alternative bid by Anthony Rhoden of Jefferson for $78,250 was also presented.

Things will soon be cooler at the Jefferson Visitors Center as Council approved a proposal from Keith Air Conditioning to replace two of the 7.5 ton air units which are no longer repairable. The cost of the replacment is $36,000.

The units have not been functioning for most of August, impacting several events which rented the building.

Ward 3 Alderman April Taylor Johnson asked Tourism Board president Colleen Taylor if the groups had been notified in advance of the problems with the air. Tourism oversees the rental of the building.

Taylor referred the question to City Administrator Melissa Boyd who said she would be in contact with renters in the next couple of days.

CHRISTUS EMS will be updating their sign at the ambulance bay on Vale street following the approval of a sign permit.

Lastly, Public Works Director Allan Whatley addressed an issue raised by Gaylon Turner over a drainage ditch which runs across Turner’s property.

According to Turner, the City has an easement and an agreement to maintain the ditch since 1963, but it has recently fallen into disrepair. Turner said he was mostly concerned about the erosion taking place near his home.

Whatley said he spent about $16,000 4-5 years ago on the area, and had put the same amount in his 2025-26 proposed budget.

Whatley said he would get with Turner and see what the best options were on the situation.
