Jefferson rodeo promotes scholarships

Staff Reports

The Becca Anderson Memorial Rodeo began in 2019 as a fundraiser for the scholarship program established in 2004 in Becca’s memory. From the beginning, the rodeo committee has strived to include events for the youth along with the normal rodeo events.

Stick horse races for kids 5 and under (no fee), mutton busting for those 8 and under ($15.00 fee) and the kids’ calf scramble will be held during each performance. Signups, required for the stick horse races and mutton busting, will open at 7:00 pm each night of the rodeo.

The most exciting event every year has been the scholarship team calf scramble. Two-person teams compete to halter and lead their calf into the winners’ circle. Up to five teams per night compete. The first two teams to enter the circle are declared the winners. Each team member will be awarded a $300.00 scholarship and $75.00 cash prize. The students may use the scholarship funds for either dual credit courses during high school or upon enrollment in a college, trade school or career apprenticeship course.

Scramble participants must not be younger than 14 nor older than 18 years of age as of September 1, 2023 and currently enrolled in either public or homeschool. Participants are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no fee to enter the calf scramble. Entry deadline is September 20th.
