JISD Board to Meet Tuesday, Discuss Graduation Plans

The Jefferson Independent School District Board will meet in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2020. The Board will again meet virtually via Google Stream.

To join or watch the meeting, you must go to: https://stream.meet.google.com/stream/ec33ccc4-9c6d-4637-99e3-89553afdc1a1

The link provided by the district for public use does not allow two-way communication. However, if one wishes to make public comment, they must submit a Public Comment Form (available on the District’s Website) to Superintendent Rob Barnwell via email by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

A copy of the Board’s Meeting Packet is available online and at the end of this article. Note that the link to the packet provided on the agenda does not work, so it must be viewed via the links on the School website or the link above.

The agenda includes a “Discussion of Graduation Plans for the Class of 2019-2020” but, as a discussion item, doesn’t allow for any action to be taken by the Board. Barnwell issued a press release earlier this week stating:

I will be working with High School Principal Michael Walker, other administrators, board members, and other stakeholders in order to come up with a plan for Jefferson ISD. We are researching this subject and plan to gather information from our senior students in order to provide the best event possible. We believe graduation is an important milestone in the lives of our students, and we want to do our best to provide a memorable and safe event that will be embraced by our seniors and their families. Obviously, an outside ceremony offers the most ‘personal’ option, but there will be many social distancing and safety guidelines to consider, communicate and follow. As soon as a plan is developed, I will provide an updated press release to help inform everyone regarding the date, time, site, and type of graduation ceremony that will be held, along with the guidelines Governor Abbott has ordered us to follow.

Other items on the agenda include:

  • Approving the 2020-21 Appraisal Calendar and List of Appraisers
  • Approval of the Marion County Appraisal District Budget
  • Allow for the Cessation of Premium Pay for Hourly Employees which Began in March
  • Amending the Extra-Duty Stipend Schedule
  • Facility Upgrades related to Driveways, Parking Areas, and Junior High Gym Roof

The Herald plans to be live for this meeting, however, we will be streaming the computer monitor’s view of the meeting.
