Celebrate National Professionals’ Day at WOJO salad luncheon

Press Release

Women of Jefferson Organization (WOJO) continues the tradition of the 1933 Study Club’s famous salad luncheon from 11a-1p April 24, at First Baptist Church, 523 N Polk St. Tickets are $12 per person.

April 24 is National Administrative Professionals’ Day so celebrate and recognize the professionals who keep an office running smoothly every day. Honor these professionals with a great salad for lunch.

The lunch will feature five home-made salads made by WOJO members – Zesty Black-Eyed Peas, 24 Hour Salad (Shoe Peg Corn), Cornbread Salad, Old-Fashioned Chicken Salad and Buttermilk Salad. These are the same recipes made for many years by the ladies of the Study Club and are all-time favorites.

Come spend your lunch hour at the Church or call in an order to pick up or have delivered within the Jefferson city limits.

This luncheon is a favorite for Jeffersonians, so please be sure to purchase tickets in advance.  WOJO wants everyone to get a taste!  Contact a WOJO member or call Cindy Pinkerton, 903-241-2593. Walk-ins welcome as long as food is available.

In speaking with Imogene Bass, a long-time member of WOJO, she said the 1933 Study Club was a federated organization with clubs throughout the nation.  She joined the 1933 Study Club in 1954.  In 1933 when the club began, most women didn’t work outside the home.  Club members looked forward each month to the meetings which always included an educational speaker.  The meetings were held in member’s homes and everyone dressed to the T’s – beautiful outfits, gloves and hats.  The Jimplecute has several articles in its archives describing these meetings in private homes.

There were clubs in Atlanta, Linden and Marshall and a district meet each year.  The clubs held fundraisers and proceeds went to scholarships, much like WOJO does today.  With more women working, the club membership gradually declined and was abandoned several years ago.

WOJO graciously agreed to carry on the wonderfully supported 1933 Study Club’s Salad Lunch. Please come out and support this great event.  All proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for high school and college students and for adults for ongoing or higher education or returning to school for special training. WOJO usually awards 8-10 scholarships a year.

WOJO’s mission is to promote women through business, education and networking while helping women with the rising cost of higher education.
