City meets to swear in newly elected officials

The City of Jefferson will hold a special meeting at 6:30p tonight, Tuesday, May 12, at the Jefferson Visitors Center, primarily to swear in the newly elected officials.

Their agenda includes:

A meeting of the City Council is a business meeting of the Municipal Corporation. Only the Mayor and City Council are entitled to participate (speak), unless the presiding officer of the meeting permits someone else to speak. City administration, city employees, and the city’s legal counsel are permitted to speak and interact with the City Council to facilitate the meeting and assist the City Council in conducting the city’s business. While meetings are open to the public to watch and hear, it does not entitle the public to speak at the meeting. The City Council nevertheless sets aside a portion of the meeting for the public to comment on an item on the agenda titled: Public Testimony.

 “PUBLIC TESTIMONY” IS FOR CONCERNS ON ITEMS THAT ARE ON THE AGENDA. The City Council MAY comment on or deliberate on the concerns raised but will normally wait until the item is called for deliberation by the presiding officer.

SIGNUP SHEETS TO SPEAK ARE LOCATED ON THE TABLE AS YOU ENTER THE MEETING ROOM

 Any citizen wishing to make public testimony to the City Council must sign up before the meeting begins by fully completing the information requested on the sign-up sheet or will not be recognized to speak.

  2. Consider and/or approve Canvassing of Election Returns and Declaring the Results of the May 2, 2026 Election for Mayor, Alderman Ward 1, Alderman Ward 2 (Full-Term), Alderman 2 (Unexpired Term), and Alderman Ward 3, through Ordinance 2026-5-1
  3. CERTIFICATION AND SWEARING IN OF ALDERMEN

      a. Present Certificate of Election to declared candidates elect, swearing in and administration of the Oath of Office and Statement of Elected/Appointed Officer to Mayor, Alderman Ward 1, Alderman Ward 2 Full Term,  Alderman Ward 2 Unexpired Term, and Alderman Ward 3. 

  1. EXECUTIVE SESSION

EXECUTIVE SESSION RESERVED: The City Council may retire to executive session any time between the meeting’s opening and adjournment for the purpose of consultation with legal counsel pursuant to Chapter 551.071 of the Texas Government Code; discussion of personnel matters pursuant to Chapter 551.074 of the Texas Government Code; deliberation regarding real property pursuant to Chapter 551.072 of the Texas Government Code; deliberation regarding economic development negotiations pursuant to Chapter 551.087 of the Texas Government Code; and/or deliberation regarding the deployment, or specific occasions for implementation of security personnel or devices pursuant to Chapter 551.076 of the Texas Government Code. Action, if any, will be taken in open session.
