Many community supporters and leaders, along with Jefferson Independent School District personnel and board members gathered at the JISD Administration Building Tuesday to celebrate the district’s new superintendent, Michael Walker.

“I am honored to have been selected to lead our district as we move forward,” Walker said. “I’m looking forward to working with our school board, our staff, the community, and other partners to grow every student every day.”

Walker previously served as principal at the high school and two years as JISD’s assistant superintendent. With a total of 25 years in education, the 1995 Avinger, Texas graduate received bachelor’s degrees in biology and kinesiology in 1999 from Stephen F. Austin State University. His 2007 master’s degree in educational administration is from Texas A&M University-Texarkana, along with his principal and superintendent certifications. During his career, he has also worked at Hughes Springs, McLeod and Ore City school districts.

He replaces Rob Barnwell, who retired in December 2022 with 25 total years in education. He began serving as JISD superintendent in 2013.
