Staff Reports

“Rain, Sleet, nor Snow” might not stop the U.S. Postal Service, but it put a damper on weekend activites.

The three-day weekend for many Marion County residents turned into a cold extra-long holiday as freezing temperatures, combined with a mix of snow and sleet on Sunday and Monday created hazardous road conditions shut down the area.

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade, youth program and banquest was also cancelled as a result of the weather conditions. The banquest was reschedueld for  6p Sunday, January 2 at the Jefferson Transportation Center.

Jefferson ISD, the City of Jefferson, and Marion County offices were all closed on Tuesday and Wednesday as roads turned slippery, or impassible, due to an accumulation of ice.

Texas Department of Transportation pre-treated major highways in the area prior to the storm, but County Roads and City Streets were iced in.

The City of Jefferson cancelled their regular Council Meeting on Tuesday in favor of rescheduling it a week later. They will meet in a Special Meeting at 5:30p  Tuesday, January 23, at the Visitor’s Center.

JISD moved their Tuesday night basketball games to Thursday evening.

City and County Emergency Services were operating during the winter weather.

Wednesday saw the second day of closures for many as roads started to thaw Tuesday afternoon, but single-digit temperatures Tuesday night made driving on Wednesday dangerous for many.

National Weather Services website shows nighttime temperatures are predicted to stay in the mid-teens through the weekend, while daytime highs are in the mid-40s. Sunday is expected to bring more rainfall to the area, along with a chance of rain on Sunday night. Next week temperatures should return to the mid-50s during the day.
