Letter to the Editor: Dial back the rhetoric

Mr Reagan starts out his column with “Another week, another lame indictment.”

I am no legal scholar. but I do understand how indictments work. A grand
jury, made up of people like you and me, is presented the prosecution’s
evidence. If the grand jury agrees there is enough evidence, indictments
follow. My first gripe is most people refuse to read the indictments, so
how can they defend one side or the other?

The second gripe is why the party of law and order blusters about having
to go to court. It is in court where they can refute the charges. Mr.
Trump and his co-defendants will have the opportunity to show the
country their rebuttal to the accusations. The prosecution will also
present their evidence. Trying these legal troubles in the media or in
our homes is not wise or healthy. We, as the Americans affected by these
trials, need to demand they be televised in their entirety. No news
outlet will give us the so-called facts without a slant. If they aren’t
televised, the public needs to read the trial transcripts.

Too many people are screaming from one side or the other while neither
has all the facts. The trial will show us all why the charges were
brought and if they are legitimate. The rhetoric needs to be dialed back while we wait for the legal process to unfold.

Thank you,
