On a crisp November Saturday, the bi- annual History, Haunts, and Legends event converged in the Jefferson Visitor Center. Ghost enthusiasts, history buffs and thrill-seekers gathered for a day of lectures as well as accounts of apparitions as told by the scheduled speakers. The night, however, provided spine-tingling experiences for those hoping to unearth the secrets of the past.

HHL is organized by the renowned Jodi Breckenridge of ‘The Historic Jefferson Ghost Walk’. With an arsenal of historical information, she guides attendees through a labyrinth of darkened streets, landmarks and buildings in search of spectral encounters, offering a unique opportunity to engage with the supernatural.

When asked about some of her favorite moments from this past weekend’s event, Breckenridge exclaimed, “I really love talking to and meeting new people that attend! Hearing stories from all those attending really is so much fun for me.”

Presenting at the engagement was the local legend himself, Mitchel Whitington. Celebrated for his books chronicling the mysteries and legends of East Texas, Whitington’s encyclopedic knowledge of the region’s paranormal history set the stage for a day chalked full of speakers eager to share their knowledge.

Brad and Barry Klinge are a dynamic duo who have explored some of the world’s most haunted locations. These special guests are known for their pioneering work in paranormal investigations. Their insights into the supernatural, coupled with their cutting-edge technology, have earned them a significant following. During the event, they captivated the audience with their tales of ghostly encounters and shared their experiences from the front lines of paranormal exploration.

When the day’s discussions had concluded, the attendees gathered at featured sites for night time paranormal explorations throughout town. The Myers Building, The Historic Jefferson Hotel, Azalea Inn, and Heather’s Guest Cottage featured paranormal research teams that led the guests in their discovery of all things ghostly.

The Myers Building now houses several antiques; however, participants were able to experience this portal to the past. This historic structure once housed a hospital during the Civil War. Witnesses have reported hearing whispers, footsteps, and eerie apparitions. On this chilling night, participants were on high alert for signs of otherworldly activity.

The historic Jefferson Hotel, known for its haunting tales, opened its doors for those eager to interact with its spectral residents. The Lady in White, is the hotel’s most famous ghost, is said to roam its halls. A chance to experience the otherworldly firsthand was a dream come true for many attendees.

The Urquhart House may be a beautiful relic of the past, but it’s also whispered to be a repository of haunted history. The spectral presence of past inhabitants is said to linger, with stories of ghostly apparitions glimpsed in the corners of rooms, and mysterious, inexplicable phenomena. Visitors find themselves immersed not only in its grandeur but also in the lingering chills and ghostly tales that make this historic mansion a paranormal destination.

Ghost hunters ventured to the Azalea Inn, where reports of ghostly children playing have intrigued enthusiasts for years. Armed with EVP recorders and infrared cameras, they sought to capture evidence of the unexplained in this bed and breakfast. The legend goes that the spirits of playful children from long ago still frolic in the inn, their presence marked by toys moved mysteriously and inexplicable cold spots.

Heather’s Guest Cottage is steeped in chilling tales of the supernatural. With each visit, guests have reported mysterious flickering lights, unexplained cold drafts, and an unmistakable feeling of being watched. Many believe that the spirit of a former resident lingers within its walls, making its presence known through disembodied whispers and occasional, inexplicable disturbances.

As the night unfolded, participants were enveloped in the rich history and chilling mysteries that Jefferson had to offer. It was an unforgettable occasion, blending the talents and the expertise of  the on site Paranormal Teams. Teams that led courageous guests through the town’s most haunted locales.
