To the Seniors of 2022:

Today is your day.

There will be others in your future too, but today is the completion of that first milestone in a lifetime of achievements.

It’s said “Some are called to greatness, and others have it thrust upon them,” but Everyone is “Called to Greatness.” Yes, some accomplishments will be greater than others, but all of you will do things that are great to your family, your friends, and your community. Some of you will be public leaders and some of you will lead quietly from behind the scenes. All of you will find your spot and be the greatest person you can be.

To do this, you need to walk into every room as if you own it and engage others in the room when you walk in. It’s not arrogance, it’s confidence. It takes time to learn but it’s one of the steps to making a positive change in your life and society.

Remember to stay humble and treat everyone equally. We all enjoy and demand respect. We may have differing viewpoints and ideologies, but each is afforded that luxury. Your opinion matters, but so does that of those around you.

While this week is forever marred by tragedy, as 19 students from Uvalde will never achieve what you do today, it’s up to you to add your thoughts and actions to society to help prevent this from happening again.

Starting this year your generation has the potential to shape America for the next half. Your generation now makes up a majority of the eligible voting population. You need to exercise that privilege. You have a voice and you need to use it – responsibly.

But, more importantly, remember those you went to school with whom you’ve lost. Remember the things they did; how they shaped your friendships and your life. They will forever be a part of you.

Remember to have compassion and to give without reward. Take up for those weaker than you and remember that life is about giving to others.

In 10 years, you’ll gather and compare notes on what each of you has done so far.

In 20 years, you’ll gather, and share family photos.

In 30 years, you’ll renew friendships and laugh about your high school years and remember those you can no longer see.

Most importantly, treasure these days forever and think fondly of each other – regardless. You don’t have to be rich or achieve public greatness to be happy and to enjoy your life.

Shakespeare said “All the World’s a stage.” You are now making your debut. The spotlight is yours. However you choose to use it, do it to the best of your ability.
